This year I wrote 207 stories, down from the 235 stories I wrote last year  This year I also explored trying to offer a Spanish version of my stories - which wasn’t received with enough interest to continue doing them - and also I decided to use video commentaries in conjunction with some of my stories.

A lot of folks told me they liked the videos, but at the same time many were too long for the casual viewer, and to create videos that would address that problem would take far more time and effort than I’m willing to devote, so while I’ll probably continue to do a video on occasion, they won’t become a regular part of my efforts next year.

Below, like last year, is a compilation of the top 30 stories - as determined by readership - that I wrote this year.  I think that they reflect the wide-range of issues that I tried to tackle, and like last year’s body of work, I believe that they not only hold their own against anything that the Miami Herald, The Miami New Times and all of the local TV stations did this year about the goings on inside the City of Miami, but I think that my efforts in trying to expose the levels of incompetence, corruption and malfeasance that goes on almost daily inside the City and the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust, demonstrated the kind of commitment and effort to seek out information that these “main stream” news organizations have decided is not worth pursuing anymore.

In comparison to the level of serious reporting on local politics and government that goes on in other communities around the country, the South Florida news media continues to provide some of the worst examples of slipshod reporting, and, what it means to be in the pocket of corrupt politicians.

First among equals in this race to the bottom is the Miami Herald, whose rapid decline as anything remotely resembling a real metropolitan newspaper is reflected in the many ways it selectively ignores embarrassing stories while treating some crooks and scoundrels in public office like honorable public servants. The top editors have  become little more than suck-asses whose behavior has resulted in squandering of the journalistic integrity of a once honorable newspaper.

I’m unsure of what the New Year will bring, although I expect to reduce my efforts in putting out the CrespoGram as often as I have in the past because after almost 4 years of doing this almost fulltime, it’s time to focus on other projects that I’m interested in exploring while I can still do so. However, there are still enough assholes loose in Regaladoland that deserve my attention, so I won’t be gone completely.

Happy New Year,

Al Crespo

MERRY CHRISTMAS
JUST REMEMBER, THIS IS MIAMI, SO THE CANDY CANE ELF KEEPS HIS STASH IN STRANGE PLACES
2013 - A LOOK BACK

Some pretty bizarre, funny, not-so-funny and amazing things happened in the Banana Republic of Regaladoland this year, and here are just a few of those highlights.

EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR
A lot of folks were in contention for this award, but at the end of the year who can argue with this prestigious award going to Madelin “Hot Lips” Pacheco, and Kira Lee “Miss Traffic Ticket” Grossman.

Both of these ladies exemplified the kinds of talent and hard work it takes to get a head in Regaladoland.
QUOTE OF THE YEAR

A lot of crazy shit got said this year, but nothing beat Miami Police Chief Chief Manny Orosa’s response under oath to a question of how I could have found out about Miami City Commissioner Frank Carollo calling him on his cell phone after he got stopped for a traffic violation.

“He’s got a lot of snitches in the police department and City Hall in general.”

A CLOSE RUNNER UP

The Chief was also involved in the second best quote of the year uttered by art dealer Gary Nadar, when he was asked by Melissa Sanchez of El Nuevo Herald about how he managed to get free, on-duty police officers to park in the lot of his his art gallery for over 4 months, at a cost of over $100,000 to the taxpayers.

“It was a gentlemen’s agreement,” said Nader. “This exhibit would not be here
without the help of the mayor and the police chief. They understand the importance
           of art for a city.”

THEY AIN’T HEAVY, THEY’RE MY BROTHERS
This year’s award for nepotism wasn’t even close. The award goes to Acting Assistant City Manager/Pretend Deputy Chief of Police Luis Cabrera, who not only fixed it so that his half brother and his wife got jobs with the city, but that his twin brother’s girl friend also got a job, before she pissed him off and he fired her.

When asked about his half brother and his wife being hired by the Miami Herald, this was Cabrera’s response:

“Luis Cabrera contends that he had nothing to do with the hiring and said he
didn’t even know his half-brothers’s wife had gotten a job in the parks department,
            which is under his supervision.”

For this lackluster commitment to public service, absentee supervision of the departments under his control, and lying to the Herald, Cabrera gets paid about $165,000 a year.

THE DUMBEST CANDIDATE
This award goes to Richard Dunn III for the astounding mismanagement of his campaign finances.

Although Dunn was a clear winner on the basis of his amazing disrespect of the voters and a failure of making even a pretense to keep accurate records of his campaign finances, in every other way, Francis Suarez was actually the worst, if not dumbest candidate to be seriously considered as a potential candidate for Mayor in a long time.

With almost $1.4 million dollars in the bank, and the possibility of raising not only more money but of being able to hire a top notch team to craft a winning campaign, the fact that Francis Suarez failed to heed what happened to his father as a result of his own absentee ballot problems back in the day, resulted in him being forced to quit the race after his cousin Steve and another campaign worker pled to misdemeanor charges because of the antics of a couple young women in bikini’s hustling absentee ballots at a street fair, and their subsequent failure to comprehend and follow the plain English instructions on how NOT to apply for these ballots. This along with other stupid shit that he did, revealed that Francis was not ready for prime time.

Francis Suarez is a nice guy and he’ll probably make a wonderful father and husband, but he doesn’t have the political smarts and skills to run for higher office. Had he been elected this time, he’d have soon become nothing more than a pliable sock puppet for the monied interests - developers, contractors and their lawyers - that donated $1 million plus to his PAC.

Therefore when his term as Commissioner ends, he should not run for reelection, nor be elected if he does, because by then the city will need real leadership in trying to recover from the damage that the Regalado gang will have done to the city.
THE YEAR’S BEST POSTER
I really don’t know who creates the posters that I feature on this site occasionally. I thought I did, but that assumption turned out to be wrong. So, someone out there has a hard-on for more than a few folks in Regaladoland, and we’re all the more entertained because of it.

THE YEAR’S BEST PHOTO

I just knew back in January that retired judge Lawrence Schwartz, who was clearly unhappy to discover when he showed up as a new member of the Commission on Ethics and Public Trust that he no longer had the power to find folks like me in contempt and put me in jail whenever I said something that he didn’t like during Commission meeting, was going to say or do something really memorable this year, and that’s why I made it a point to show up at all of the Commission meetings with my video camera.

It took him till September, but the judge did not let me down. He’s the one holding the Blue folder and shielding his comments from the the folks - including almost all the TV stations in attendance - during the hearing on Frank Carollo’s calling the Chief of Police on his cell phone after being stopped for a traffic violation.

I believe - and I’ve spent considerable time looking for other examples - that this is perhaps the single best image in existence that illustrates what a clear and unequivocal violation of Florida’s Sunshine Law looks like.

It is with some interest that I await to see how the corrupt Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office chooses to deal with this violation, given that it was committed by individuals entrusted with upholding the highest standards of ethical behavior in the county, and that the Executive Director of this outfit is none other than “Let ‘em Go Joe” Centorino, one of State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle’s former flunkies, who used to be in charge of the State Attorney’s Public Corruption Unit before he got this job as a reward for providing cover for those on Fernandez-Rundle’s Family and Friends Plan.

Centorino also happens to be responsible for hiring and rehiring the Assistant State Attorney now in charge of this case, and it was his doing her a favor that let Centorinio to illegally order one of his investigators to conduct the phony Sunshine Law violation investigation involving the Hialeah City Commission just before the election in November.

You can’t make this shit up.

THIS IS WHAT BANANA REPUBLIC LAW ENFORCEMENT LOOKS LIKE

This text message was written in November, by Ricardo “Lookdown” Roque, who retired as an Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Miami earlier this year.

Mind you, I have been told that this message pretty much reflects Roque’s grasp of English. Roque first came to the public’s attention during the City Commission’s hearing in September 2011, over the firing of Police Chief Miguel Exposito.

Exposito had wanted to demote Roque, and that effort was one of the reasons Exposito was fired. Below is a portion of the video of that hearing where former Internal Affairs Major, Al Alvarez, described why the Chief had wanted to demote Roque.

To appreciate the degree of political corruption that allowed Roque to go from almost being demoted, to an Assistant Chief of Police, to retiring with a healthy pension, and now to his return as a member of Mayor Tomas Regalado’s staff you need to watch this portion of the video from that September 2011 hearing.

Roque was the officer who was told to quit hanging out at Cuban Crafters, and who was the one who used to hold Roll Call of the officers under his command there. The other officer mentioned in the video - the one who used to drive around in the owner’s Bentley - was Major Raul Herbello. You might not remember the name, but if you’re a regular reader you’ll recognize him in this photograph, standing at attention while waiting for Armando “The Whopper” Gutierrez to get out of the SUV.

Roque and Herbello, along with their bosom pal, Acting Assistant City Manager/Pretend Deputy Chief of Police Luis Cabrera, are part of what some folks in the Miami Police Department fear will become the reign of “The Three Midgets,” next year when current Chief Manny Orosa retires.

THE POOCH NEEDS A NIP & TUCK
It seems that the poor pooch has been screwed so badly by the gang in Regaladoland over the last 4 years that I heard at City Hall last week that an RFP is being prepared to get the poor pooch a virginia reconstruction and rejuvenation.
