Last month I wrote about on duty City of Miami police officers who were being used as private security guards for art dealer Gary Nadar at his gallery in the Midtown District.

During the month of December,  two separate shootings in the area left one teenager paraplized and another dead, and officers called me to complain that with the force undermanned, this was both a waste of manpower and public money, and more importantly caused problems because these officers were grounded to Nadar’s parking lot instead of patrolling the District.

I thought that the practice had ended after the New Year, and was surprised when I started getting calls from officers again this week telling me that this practice was still going on and that it was supposedly expected to go on until at least the end of March.

I don’t know what the cost of 24-7 police protection costs, but it’s probably got to be in the $25-$30 thousand dollar a month range, and this is money that the taxpayers are being forced to pay for a multimillionaire art dealer to have these cops parking in his parking lot.

I was told that all of this is happening under the orders of Tomas Regalado. Whether it is, or whether it’s a deal cooked up by Commissioner “Ethics” Sarnoff, another Nadar pal, this is a flagrant abuse of public money and misuse of police officers at a time when everyone is complaining how the police department is undermanned by anywhere from 50 to 100 officers.
