SAY IT AIN’T SO, BECKY
MIAMI-DADE HERITAGE TRUST ACCUSED OF TRYING TO EXTORT GENTING CASINO FOLKS FOR MONEY

In an explosive story, The Florida Clarion, a blog tha covers politics state-wide posted a story on July 27th, that the recent effort by the Miami-Dade Heritage Trust to get the Miami City Commission to declare the Miami Herald building a “historic landmark,” came about only after the Trust failed in an attempt to “extort” a “$2 million donation” from the Genting Casino company.

The story is based on the allegations of an unidentified lobbyist “with knowledge of the conversations.”

Unbeknownst to most folks, The Heritage Trust has for years had their offices in a house on what is probably one of the most valuable pieces of City of Miami owned property at SE 12 Terrace and Brickell Bay Drive.

The Trust has an annual sweetheart deal with the City, paying just $50.00 a month for this property.

Like most folks in Miami, I originally had a very foggy idea of just who these Heritage folks were, figuring that the were probably a bunch of do-gooders with too much time on their hand.

That opinion changed drastically after I had several personal conversations with Becky Roper Matkow, the Trust’s Executive Director, over the antics of Don Worth in trying to get the City of Miami to give him and his pals control of the Miami Marine Stadium earlier this year.

I documented part of those conversations, and the way Worth had used the Heritage Trust as a front, while trashing them, in my stories about the efforts to take over the Miami Marine Stadium.

What amazed me then, but what convinced me afterwards that Matkow, and by implication the Trust, would sell their Mommas on the Home Shopping Network, was the slavish willingness not to stand on principle, but rather to employ whatever means were required to elbow their way into getting a seat at the table - the same table that Worth had worked so hard to deny them access to - and then, to continue to allow him to be a Trustee of the Heritage Trust.

These Heritage Trust folks aren’t stand up people, and while I can’t speak for the claims made by the Florida Clarion about them trying to extort $2 million from the Genting folks, I can tell you that after watching them in action over the Marine Stadium deal I wouldn’t trust any of them as far as I could throw them.

And now that this deal has landed in the lap of the Miami City Commission, it will be very interesting to watch just how the 5 Dwarfs deal with it.

It’s Miami, Bitches!
