CRESPOGRAM REPORT

DECEMBER 19, 2012

LUGO LOSES ELECTION

By a vote of 351 to 285, Detective Tommy Reyes beat out Officer Edward Lugo for the position of Secretary of the Miami Police Department’s FOP, Lodge 20.

This was the first FOP election that did not involve votes being collected in a cigar box, long viewed as  the way that the old guard maintained control over who got elected.  Even with the electronic voting system in place there was a last minute squabble over claims that Reyes was nominated by a retired officer who supposedly had not sent in his latest monthly dues check.  After some debate at Wednesday’s FOP meeting, Lugo withdrew his challenge, and this controversy was put to bed.

Ortiz still has the opportunity to appoint Lugo to a position on the board, but from the outcry over Ortiz’s letter of endorsement of Lugo, maybe this might be time for Ortiz to consider the obligations of leadership.
