THE FIRST OF MANY?

Our colleague at The Straw Buyer, who has covered this story from the beginning, broke the news last Friday that Veldora Arthur was found guilty on ALL charges.

Now that justice confirmed what was obvious to even a nitwit, the question remains of why Miami Fire Chief Maurice Kemp authorized Arthur to continue to remain on the city’s payroll after she was indicted, and worse, why she was allowed to keep her city take home car.

True, she was presumed innocent until the jury found her guilty, but a major indictment in a multi-million dollar fraud conspiracy is not a minor offense, and she could have been suspended with the understanding that if she was found innocent she could have received her pay for the period of time she was suspended.

Nor, as an Assistant Fire Chief was she covered by any union contract provisions.  This was a decision made by Chief Kemp, and it reflects badly on his judgment and on looking out for the interests of the taxpayers of the City of Miami.

IN ANY EVENT, KUDOS TO THE STRAW BUYER FOR CONTINUING TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS CORNER OF CORRUPTION.

On Monday afternoon at 4:00 PM, in either Courtroom A or B at the Lawson E. Thomas Courthouse Center, at 175 NW 1st Avenue, (North of the old Courthouse, and East of the Metro Building), there will be an Emergency Hearing over the failure of Angel Zayon, Chief of the City’s of Miami’s Communication’s Department, to comply with the Court Order to provide his wife and children with temporary support.

For the 2nd time, the Court Docket reveals Zayon has fired his lawyer, which means that the taxpayers are financing his side of this divorce case since the Crespo-Gram Report has been provided with the name of at least one Assistant City Attorney who it is believed has been generating his legal documents during the times he has been lawyer less.

Now however, unless Zayon waltzes into court with lawyer Number 3, he will be representing himself at Monday’s hearing, that is actually, according to the docket a hearing on whether he is in Contempt Of Court for failing to take care of his wife and kids.

Given Zayon’s generally contemptible behavior, how poetic would it be for the judge to slam him with a day or two in jail as a reality check.

As I indicated, it’s one of the courtrooms on the 19th Floor, so if you’re interested but get lost, show up a little before 4:00 PM, and keep an eye out for anyone with spiky hair that looks like a lesbian in heat with a little Pimp Daddy walk.

Angel will show you the way.

WHEN DOES THE MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL-BOARD SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
IS ARTS & MINDS ACADEMY THE WORST CHARTER SCHOOL IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY?
   CRUMB BUM
    DEAD BEAT

A few months ago when I read the letter to the Miami-Dade School-Board that had been submitted by some angry parents I thought that it was a pretty damning indictment of a poorly run Charter School.

Then there was the revelation that Poch’s corporation owed tens of thousands of dollars in property taxes on the property that housed the school.

After that, there was the revelation about the Code Enforcement Violations.

That was followed by the revelation about the illegal collection of fees.

At this point you’d have to start saying, What The Fuck!?!  What’s going on here?  How can a Charter School, funded with taxpayers money continue to operate without someone stepping in and saying, ‘This Crazy Shit’s Got To Stop!’

Well, we’re in Miami, Bitches!, where it takes a lot more than a laundry list of serious violations to raise anyone’s concerns when it comes to the operation of a Charter School.

In fact, its only thanks to parents, teachers and students - yes students - that I’ve a whole new appreciation for how fucked up this operation really is, and to underscore the failure to step in and clean this mess up, I’ve been provided new information and violations against this Charter School that makes you wonder whether the Miami-Dade School Board’s administrators have become willing enablers in this on-going corrupt enterprise.

THE NEW LETTERS OF VIOLATION

Two of the letters were actually served on the school last year, but appear only to have been uncovered by parents recently.

The first letter is kind of serious since it involves the requirement to fingerprint the members of the Governing Board before the approval of a contract with the School Board.

This issue turned out to reveal that Ceclia Holloman, for whatever reason, wasn’t eligible to serve on the Board.  It also revealed that 3 other Board members had not complied with the requirements for fingerprinting.

Then there were the videos of the Governing Board meetings that revealed that these supposed “educators” were little more than a collection of arrogant assholes.

In a followup letter, it was revealed that a handful of employees had also not been fingerprinted, and that another employee had been let go for problems discovered when he was fingerprinted.

In addition, board member Ignacio Ortiz-Petit, was discovered to be  cashing in on his relationship with the school.

A persistent problem is the efforts by Poch to jam as many kids into the school as possible.  The school was warned as far back as last September that they had more kids that were allowed, and Poch’s efforts to do away with the retail shops fronting Commodore Plaza in favor of converting those spaces into classrooms this year are obviously his latest attempt to get the attendance up to 500 kids.

One thing that always puzzled me was how Poch was able to get around Section 4-11 of the Miami City Code that prohibits a school from being within 1000 feet of an establishment that sells alcohol.  I tried looking back to see if the City Commission granted the school an exemption, and who would have been the sponsor of such an effort, but I’ve had no luck.

If there is such an exemption, please send me a link to the City Commission meeting minutes where it was granted.

In the meantime, Poch and his school have managed to make the big-time of Charter School corruption. There’s a national blog called Charter School Scandals, and Arts & Minds Academy is prominently featured on their front page.

It’s Miami, Bitches!

GOODBYE STEVE JOBS

I don’t know what my life would be today without Steve Jobs.  The simple elegance of his computers and software made it possible for me not only to publish this website, but over the last 25 plus years, his creations helped shape my life in ways that I will be forever grateful.

I am convinced that my exposure to his computers and software helped rewire my brain to be more creative, more organized and far more productive than I could have ever imagined as I reach the beginning of what used to be considered old age.

Like is never fair, and his death underscores just how unfair it can be.  If the world were as cool as Job’s computers and software, he would not have died at 56, but rather he would have been granted unlimited years of life as the reward for having changed the world, and our lives in such wondrous ways.

We are all richer for his contributions to our world, and while I know that he leaves of legacy of yet to be revealed creations, I know that this was a special time to be alive in part because of his vision and creativity.

If there’s a heaven, I hope when Job’s showed up everyone was carrying an IPOD.
