CRESPOGRAM REPORT

JANUARY 30, 2012

QUEEN OF SWAG
THE QUEEN ENDED THE YEAR STRONG

For those of you new to the CrespoGram Report, the reason that I call Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle, the Queen Of Swag, is that like some B List celebrity who goes from awards show to awards show collecting the swag that they give to folks in the “Gifting Rooms” at these events, Fernandez-Rundle has, over the last 3 years, managed to rack up a little over $27,000.00 in free gifts, from tickets to events, limo service, hotel rooms, meals, jewelry and even $125 in roses from Tom Scotto, OJ Simpson’s BFF in Miami.

No one, and I want to repeat that, no other elected or appointed politician in Miami-Dade County, nor do I suspect in the entire state of Florida, has come anywhere near that total of swag collected while being a public official.

For a State Attorney to be seen accepting that quantity of gifts is a shameful and corrupting example of a public official who long ago lost track of what it means to set an example of probity as the lead law enforcement official in this community.

In addition to the gifts that she collects, as I reported earlier this month in the illegal renaming of a portion of SW 12th Avenue, she has her staff out trolling for awards and recognition to feed an almost insatiable need for recognition that obviously comes from being vain and insecure.

Last October, when I made my quarterly request for the FORM 9’s for the various politicians I keep track of, I was surprised that Fernandez-Rundle had only submitted one award dinner on her FORM 9, and figured that maybe she had decided to cut back on taking all the free tickets.

I needn’t have worried. Like the trooper that she is, Fernandez-Rundle came back strong in the last quarter, with a total of $2750.00 in new gift tickets including 2 - $1000 tickets to a Celine Dion concert.

To be fair, even though I rag on Fernandez-Rundle, she at least files gift reports, which is more than can be said for all the Dwarfs at Miami City Hall, and by other politicians throughout Miami-Dade County.

For now though, the total amount of gifts accepted by Katherine Fernandez-Rundle since I started keeping track is, $27,806,46.

For comparison sake, that’s more than the annual median income for someone living in the City of Miami.
